Places
On the grounds of the Chateau at Chenonceau, I came upon this scene.
I was seated across from this Cafe near the Spanish steps. I waited as the sun was setting and the lights came on inside. It’s interesting that the only person smiling is in the wheelchair.
On the rocky coast of Nova Scotia, Peggy’s Cove is one of the most picturesque spots in Canada.
Just walking by and caught this shot. It has the most figures of any work of mine. Still, though not detailed, enough psychology comes through to carry the scene.
Near Edwards Colorado this ranch has provided me with many subjects over the years.
As a boy, my family had a summer cottage in Berkeley Mass. the Taunton River flowed out to Narragansett Bay. The water was brackish and in winter ice would form on the river that the tide would push up onto the shore.
On a trip to see the Bayeaux tapestry we passed this small cafe. Just too tranquil to pass.
It’s hard to mistake Japan for anywhere else. The cherry blossoms, the identically uniformed gardeners, the hand weeding and trimming: all part of the Japanese esthetic.
The scene makes the floating market seem tranquil. It’s no. Boats jam every inch of the waterway with an unimaginable array of goods. It’s just luck catching just one boat.
Sedona Arizona is surrounded with natural beauty. This entry, though man made has the light and shadow that usually catches my eye.
This Chilean town has some of the most beautiful murals. The art vibe is everywhere even though the buildings look past their prime.
Colonial Williamsburg has several shops the evoke their colonial heritage. This late December window scene interested me because of the low dull light and reflections.
Crossing the San Moise bridge, I looked down and saw the gondolas tied up alongside this cafe.
This barn in Leadville Colorado stands beside an old schoolhouse. Some locals told me it was the only school. Built during the silver boom the one room school has been abandoned for decades.
One of several subjects from Kyoto. The sheeting water emphasized but the varied colored lights give this composition its appeal.
This cafe is right beside the Roman coliseum in Arles, France. If you look, you’ll see Nora and I under the red umbrella.
Miranda was my grandfather’s boyhood home. Isolated in the mountains between Rome and Naples, the 800 residents in this scene are celebrating the arrival of the new year at midnight.
I raced back to shoot a photo of this church at dusk.
I did this piece around 1976. I made the shot with a Hasselblad camera on my way home from Lexington Green.
This bin of wooden shoes contains left overs from a shoe making demonstration in Zaandam Holland.
You would not expect to find Samurai swords in Peru. That made this subject even more interesting when I encountered it in a museum in Lima.
This piece was done from a photo I took of a shop window in St. Marks Square, Venice.
From a visit to a preserved Icelandic village.
This subject along with a few others came from a preserved Icelandic village.
In Great Falls Montana you’ll find a museum dedicated to the western artist Charles M. Russell. I admire his work but the takeaway was this shot of his saddle.
Visiting a factory in Thailand that made Buddhas, I was struck by the contrast of such a quintessentially spiritual object wrapped in the quintessential commercial material - plastic.
I found this feeding frenzy subject in the lobby of a resort in Kauai. Out of view is a concrete shelf at the very bottom. Several Koi launched themselves onto the shelf to feed before wiggling back into the pond.
During a stop at a Bedouin camp in the Jordanian desert, I captured several subjects including the Bedouin. Himself, (see him in the “people” section. This beautifully tooled canteen stood out.
These hats were on display in a shop window in Chester England
In Ketchikan Alaska, I visited a sled dog kennel. In the yard were goats on, in, and under this old ford.
This carriage driver was parked outside of Saint Stephen’s cathedral in Vienna. I was photographing his horse which is shown in the “horses” section. He’s giving me a dirty look because I am taking pictures instead of a taking a carriage ride.
I did this piece to donate to the church where my grandfather was baptized. The town’s patron Saint is St. Anthony. I placed him in front of the medieval fountain in Miranda. The Saint is giving a drink of water to the child. I know of five generations of my family who were baptized in this church. It hangs there now.
Moroccan Rose
Walking around Wolfgangzee in Austria, I saw a lone swan gliding past. This bird is elegant and graceful in the water; much less so on land.
I visited a horse rescue ranch in Colorado. The ranch cares for dozens of old, abandoned horses.
There are many tourist carriages waiting for fares outside of Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. While photographing this horse I noticed I was getting the evil eye from the driver in the carriage. He’s shown in the “people” section named “Bill Sykes” after the murderer in “Oliver Twist”.
